The most famous pilgrimage destination in Kerala is Sabarimala.
The Sabarimala pilgrimage begins in the month of November and ends in January and attracts pilgrims from all parts of the country and abroad. A lot of pilgrims go to Sabarimala from Hyderabad every year.

Mandalapooja (Nov.17th) and Makaravilakku (Jan.14th) are the two main events of the pilgrim season. The temple stays closed during the rest of the year except for the first five days of every Malayalam month and during Vishu (April).

Pilgrims set out in groups under a leader, and each carry a cloth bundle called “Irumudi kettu” containing traditional offerings. The easiest route is via Chalakkayam, by which one can reach the banks of the river Pamba by vehicle. Pamba is the main halting point on the way to Sabarimala. From here one has to trek 4 to 5 kms to reach the temple.

Temple closes, after the season, on 20-01-2009. This is immediately after the Pandalam Royal Representatives pay obeisance to the Lord at 0700 hrs on 20-01-2009

How to reach Pampa
By Rail:
The pilgrims can reach Kottayam & Chengannur by Railway and Punalur and from there by bus to Pampa.

KSRTC has started operating buses to Palani and Thenkashi from Pampa for the convenience of the Sabarimala pilgrims. Besides, the Govt. of Tamil Nadu has been given the permission to operate 20 buses from different parts of Tamil Nadu to Pampa. A chain service exists between Pampa and Nilackal base camp.

The Chilkur Balaji Temple

The Balaji Temple is located at Chilkur in the Hyderabad district. It is 33 Kms away from Mehedipatnam. Approximately 75,000 to 1,00,000 devotees visit in a week. Generally temple gets heavy rush on Fridays and Sundays.

From the style, structure and appearance, it can be inferred that the temple was built half a millennium ago. Set in sylvan surroundings, the temple attracts thousands of pilgrims every year and is an ideal place for sequestered retreat and meditation. It enjoyed in the past, great days of pomp and glory.

The temple at Chilkur is managed by the hereditary trustee Sri M.V. Soundara Rajan and Sri C.S. Gopala Krishna. The entire family of the archaka, including the women are dedicated themselves to serve the God.

The Sunkishala Devalayam

The Sunkishala Devalayam is located in the Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh. It is about 80 kms from Hyderabad.

The Sunkishala Temple complex has temples dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, Lord Shiva, Lord Rama, and SaiBaba. Each temple is constructed in the distinct style of the presiding deity.

The temple opens daily at 6 a.m. and closes at 8 p.m.

How to reach

Sunkishala is about 26 kms from the Bhongir Railway station and 5kms from the Voligonda Railway station. Trains from Hyderabad going towards Warangal stop at these stations.

Kulpakji - Jain Shrine at Kolanpak Village

Kulpakji is a Jain Shrine at the Kolanpak village in Nalgonda district. The temple is said to be more than 2000 years old and is still being worked upon. It is said that the renovations in a Jain temple never cease. They are always working on polishing the existing structure or making new additions. The temple houses three idols - one each of Lord Adinath, Lord Neminath and Lord Mahaveer.

There are eight idols of the other Tirthankars on both the sides of the main temple. The statue of Lord Mahaveera is 52" inches tall and said to be of single piece of sapphire. Idols of Lord Simandar Swami and Mata Padmavati are installed on either side of the main temple.

Kulpakji is an important pilgrimage centre of Swetamber Jains in South India.



How to reach

Kulpakji is about 80 Kms from Hyderabad on the Hyderabad-Warangal Highway (NH 202). The roads have been newly laid and as such the drive is not tiring. Alternately you can board a train or bus from Hyderabad. These halt at the Aler station which is around 6-7 kms from the temple. Tongas and Autorickshaws are available to go to the temple from the Aler station.

Food & Accomodation

There are Choultries/Dharamsalas for the visiting pilgrims to rest and stay. The old ones are free to stay in while a minimal amount is charged for the newly constructed rooms.

There is dinning hall for the pilgrims where breakfast, lunch and dinner is served between sunrise and sunset. The food is delicious.

Birla Mandir

The Birla Mandir is a splendid piece of architecture. Built by the Birla Foundation, the temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara or Srinivasa.

The granite image of the presiding deity is about 11 ft. tall and a carved lotus forms an umbrella on the roof. The consorts of Lord Venkateswara, 'Padmavati' and 'Andaal' are housed in separate shrines.

The temple manifests a blend of South Indian, Rajasthani and Utkal temple architectures and is made of 2000 tons of pure Rajasthani white marble. It is built on a 280-feet high hillock called the Naovath Pahad in a 13 acres plot. The construction of the temple took 10 years and it was consecrated in 1976.

The temple complex overlooking the southern side of Hussain Sagar, offers a superb panoramic view of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

The temple is open for visitors from 7 a.m. to 12 noon and 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. all days of the week.
